Hamburg cruise port and Berlin: day trip or extra nights?

The short answer. Berlin is about 1 hour 47 minutes from Hamburg by ICE, with trains roughly every 30 minutes. A day trip works on an overnight or very long call, as long as you allow for getting from your cruise terminal to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof. If you're starting or ending your cruise in Hamburg, a night or two in Berlin is the better plan.

A big, busy cruise port

Hamburg is Germany’s busiest cruise port: 295 ocean cruise calls in 2025 and 331 planned for 2026, plus dozens of river cruise calls. Most big-ship calls are turnarounds, where passengers start or end their cruise, which makes Hamburg a natural gateway to Berlin.

The three terminals

  • HafenCity: the newest (opened September 2025), in the city centre next to the Überseequartier.
  • Altona: on the north bank of the Elbe, west of the centre.
  • Steinwerder: on the south side of the harbour, in the working port.

Use the terminal named in your cruise documents, and check how to get from it to Hamburg Hauptbahnhof. Cruise Gate Hamburg publishes the ship schedule and terminal for each call.

Berlin by train

ICE trains run between Hamburg Hauptbahnhof and Berlin Hauptbahnhof about every 30 minutes, with a scheduled journey of 107 minutes since the route reopened after its general renovation in June 2026. The line has had further closures for follow-up work, so check bahn.de for your date before you plan around it.

Day trip on a port call

Only on an overnight or very long call. Allow for the terminal to the station (by taxi or public transport, depending on terminal), about two hours on the train each way, and a return buffer of at least an hour. On a typical 08:00–18:00 call that leaves too little time in Berlin to be worth the effort; spend the day in Hamburg instead.

If you do go, a Berlin guide can meet your train: see a guide who meets your train.

Starting or ending your cruise in Hamburg

This is where Berlin fits best. Fly into Berlin, spend one or two nights, then take the ICE to Hamburg on embarkation day (or the reverse at the end). See private Berlin tours before or after your cruise.

Questions people ask

How long is the train from Hamburg to Berlin?

The scheduled ICE journey is 107 minutes, with trains about every 30 minutes since the line reopened after renovation in June 2026. Check for engineering works on your date: the line has had further weekend closures for follow-up work.

Which cruise terminal will I use in Hamburg?

Hamburg has three: Altona, Steinwerder and HafenCity. They are not interchangeable, so use the terminal named in your cruise documents. HafenCity is the most central; Steinwerder is across the harbour in the working port.

Can I do Berlin as a day trip from a Hamburg port call?

On an overnight or very long call, yes. Allow time to reach Hamburg Hauptbahnhof from your terminal, then about two hours each way by train. On a normal day call you'd get only a few hours in Berlin, and Hamburg itself is well worth the day.
