Berlin from a cruise ship: frequently asked questions
Getting there
My itinerary says Berlin. Where does the ship actually dock?
Usually at Warnemünde, Rostock's seaside district on the Baltic, about 240 km north of Berlin. Some itineraries call at Hamburg or Kiel instead, both of which are farther from Berlin in time.
How long does it take to get from Warnemünde to Berlin?
By private van, about 2 h 15 min to Berlin and 2 h 30 min back. By train, about 3 hours 10 minutes with a change in Rostock (2026 timetable; check bahn.de for your date).
Time in Berlin
How much time will I have in Berlin?
On a typical 07:00–19:00 call, about five hours by private van, less by coach or train. Less than about ten hours in port leaves too little time to be worth it. Use our Berlin time calculator with your ship's times.
Safety and guarantees
Is it safer to book the cruise line's excursion?
In one specific way, yes: the ship waits for its own tours if they're delayed. It won't wait for independent tours or travellers. Many independent operators offer return guarantees; read what they cover.
Can I go to Berlin by train on my own?
Yes. It's the cheapest option and works well for confident travellers on long calls. Plan backwards from all-aboard and come back one train earlier than you think you need. Our train guide explains how.
On the day
What's the weather like?
The Warnemünde season runs from late March to late December. Summer days in Berlin are often warm; spring and autumn can be cool and changeable. Bring a light waterproof whatever the forecast says.
Are shops open on Sundays?
Most shops in Germany close on Sundays. Sights, cafés, restaurants and museums open as usual.
Do I need euros?
Cards are widely accepted, but carry some euros for small cafés, kiosks and paid toilets.
Can I visit the Reichstag dome?
Only with a free advance registration through the German Bundestag's website, made weeks ahead. Most shore-day visitors see the building from outside.
About us
Is the private excursion suitable for people with limited mobility?
Usually, yes: the van takes you close to each stop and the route can avoid long walks. Tell us about any needs when you enquire and we'll plan around them.
Who runs this website?
Berlin Experiences, a Berlin private tour company. We sell our own excursions here and say so, and some links to other operators earn us a commission. See How we make money.
