Kiel cruise port and Berlin: what's realistic

The short answer. Berlin is not a day trip from Kiel. The fastest trains take just under four hours with one change, so a port day would be almost all travel. If your cruise starts or ends in Kiel, spend a night or two in Berlin before or after. On a Kiel port day, Lübeck, Laboe or Kiel itself make far better use of your time.

The port

Kiel handled 187 cruise calls and about 1.1 million cruise passengers in 2025, and expected around 212 calls in 2026. Most traffic is turnarounds for German and European lines (AIDA, Costa, MSC, TUI Cruises), with international ships calling for the day as well.

Terminals: Ostseekai (the main cruise terminal, central), Ostuferhafen Berth 1 (east bank, used heavily by MSC), and on busy days the Sartorikai and Norwegenkai. Which ship is in when, and at which berth: the Kiel ship calendar.

Berlin before or after a Kiel cruise

Berlin and Kiel are about four hours apart by train with one change, usually in Hamburg. The simple plan: fly into Berlin, spend one or two nights, and take the train north on embarkation day, leaving plenty of margin. See private Berlin tours before or after your cruise.

On a Kiel port day

Spend it nearby:

  • Lübeck: the medieval Hanseatic old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is about an hour and a quarter away by regional train.
  • Laboe: the naval memorial and the submarine U-995 on the beach, across the fjord from Kiel.
  • Kiel itself: the waterfront, the Kiel Canal locks at Holtenau, and, in June, the Kieler Woche sailing festival.

Questions people ask

How long does it take to get from Kiel to Berlin?

About four hours by train with one change (the fastest connections are just under four hours), and a similar time by road. That makes a Berlin day trip from a Kiel port call impractical.

Which terminal will my ship use in Kiel?

Most cruise ships use the Ostseekai terminal in the city centre. Large ships, especially MSC, often use Ostuferhafen Berth 1 on the other side of the fjord, and the Sartorikai and Norwegenkai are used on busy days. Check your cruise documents.
